Fakestate: Look Back

Fakestate: Look Back is born from anxiety of ambiguous self-identification, presented in the form of a fictional narrative of Carton. The representation of the “real-estate” in Carton’s perception is an impossible space, a personal Kinkaku-ji(The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, Yukio Mishima) slipping through the cracks of mirrors into Carton’s adjacency. The dual of selves(self in the “I-Thou” relationship of Carton and the “real-estate”; self in the “I-It” relationship of Carton and her immediate world of objects) is simultaneously nested in the cavity of Carton, causing her confusion, indetermination, and struggle in self-identification. The discontinuity of Carton’s identity with both the reality at present and her remnants of the past traps Carton within this room of nothingness.
